Sunset in the Mountains

Even though in Southern California, we can now feel that the summer is over and the winter is getting closer. The reason is altitude. Six thousand feet above the ocean will give you some sense of seasons, even in the sub-tropics. It is only three weeks away from the time where we had the first snow last year.

Over the last week trees have put on their autumn outfit and are now wearing all brown after a short phase of a green-brown combination. Sure, there are many trees that will remain green all year, but the oaks around here now invite to collect colorful leaves and put them between the pages of a book to dry and preserve.

Days become noticably shorter and now, as I write this, half past five, it is completely dark. But a bit earlier I noticed a symphony of colors developing above the mountains and I was able to capture a glimpse of it…

Getting the Perspective Just Right

In the olden day of photography, you know – before Photoshop and digital cameras, you had to get it right the first time. Sure, you could go back and try again once you saw the result, about a week after getting back home, but there were times when that was just not feasible. It always was an exciting time when the envelope with the developed slides was in the mailbox.

Sometimes the excitement went away quickly, but more often than not it was then, the following evening, after all the mishaps had been sorted out and discarded, that the slide projector was set up, aimed at the silver screen and everybody gathered in the darkened room to relive the time a few, or at least one, weeks back.

Slides and the silver screen were the best means to watch pictures at that time, much less expensive than prints and a lot bigger. That is why slides had always been my medium of choice when I took photos as my artistic expression.

Slides and the silver screen went out after I moved to the US and it became very difficult to actually buy a slide projector. Slide projection was replaced by – really nothing. Until about now. Now I am using a 32 inch monitor which is located much closer to me than the silver screen had been, so the apparent size of images viewed on that monitor is comparable in size, maybe even bigger. Additionally this is an active light source – not reflective as the silver screen – so the luminance is much higher, and I don’t have to wait to the evening or darken the room.

So, yes, we have come around and caught up with the size of the slide show in the evening and surpassed it in convenience and speed. Now I can take the picture and view it pretty much right away.

Slide scanners have also given me the opportunity to view these old slides on the new display medium. I never had noticed the grain in the images when viewing the slides natively, but with some creative filtering we can reduce this shortcoming over the film emulsion.

On looking through some old slides taken in Paris, France in the Tuileries (the gardens surrounding the Louvre) I ran into one image that prompted me to write this post…

It’s one where, if I had the chance, would go back and take it at a slightly different angle so that the hand would be really exactly above the head of the statue. With a lot of Photoshop work I could probably fix it after the fact but I decided to leave it as it is and just enjoy the charm of “missing it by that much” (quote Maxwell Smart.)

As for some newer pictures that get it just right, here a little collection of photos that made it into my mailbox (thanks, Beverly!)

Irena Sendler v. Al Gore

Irena SendlerGot this very interesting and heart-warming story of Irena Sendler presented in an email today.

Here first the story, then I will tell what impressed me most:

There recently was a death of a 98 year old lady named Irena.

During WWII, Iliana, got permission to work in the Warsaw Ghetto, as a Plumbing/Sewer specialist.

She had an ulterior motive…

She KNEW what the Nazi’s plans were for the Jews, (being German). Iliana smuggled infants out in the bottom of her tool box she carried, and she carried in the back of her truck a Burlap sack, (for larger kids). She also had a dog in the back, that she trained to bark when the Nazi soldiers let her in, and out of the ghetto. The soldiers of course wanted nothing to do with the dog, and the barking covered the kids/infants noises. During her time and course of doing this, she managed to smuggle out and save 2500 kids/infants. She was caught, and the Nazi’s broke both her legs, and arms, and beat her severely. Iliana kept a record of the names of all the kids she smuggled out, and kept them in a glass jar, buried under a tree in her back yard. After the war, she tried to locate any parents that may have survived it, and reunited the family. Most of course had been gassed. Those kids she helped got placed into foster family homes, or adopted.

A while back Iliana was up for the Nobel Peace Prize….
She LOST.

Al Gore won, for a slide show on Global Warming.
Check it out: www.irenasendler.org

I will say nothing about the story itself as I have decided quite some time ago that it is not possible for me to decide what about all the atrocities during WWII is true and what’s not. There are indications that’s just the story the victors want to tell to look good, but there is also the other side which would indicate that there really is something to all this mass murder.

But the fact that I have no first hand information and no way to get them, combined with my solidifying conviction that there is no independent reality I have given up deciding what historical story might be true.

So, nothing about saving Jewish kids, but what caught my attention was the tone of the writer in the last sentence, that Al Gore won the Nobel price for a slide show.

I just love it when politicians are finally seen for what they really are. And if the population starts to laugh about these guys for giving themselves prizes in self-adoration then I have high hopes for all of us that we will get over this celebritizing (hey, Oxford dictionary editors, this is a new word for you!) of our tyrants, kick them out and finally build a non-violent stateless society – one in which Irena would get acknowledged for her brave action.

The origin of the name Google – where it really comes from

Google LogoHave you ever wondered where Google got its name from. There are some of these companies that have become household names and nobody really considers any more where their names come from – Amazon, Yahoo, et al.

But somebody must have sat down and really thought about it. It is rare that something is materializing out of thin air. Often we get an inspiration from something that passes by – even if only fleeting.

Google, after being known around the world and even becoming a verb now could not possibly admit that its name would not reflect deep thought (pun intended) and consideration, so the official version is that Google comes from the mathematical term “googol”, to equal 10100, a number much larger than even the atoms in this universe.

But here I now have for you the “real source” of the  name:

Today I re-read, for the xth time, Douglas Adam’s “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and there it was – plain and simple:

In the story of this (must read) book where the two programmers Lunkwill and Fook talk to the computer Deep Thought the first time after its completion to find out if it will indeed be able to compute an easy answer to all the questions about life, the universe and everything, and this computer classifies itself as only the second most powerful computer in the universe, the following dialog pursues:

“There must be a mistake,” he [Lunkwill] said, “are you not a greater computer than the Millard Gigantubrain at Maximegalon which can count all the atoms in a star in a millisecond?”

“The Millard Gigantubrain?” Said Deep Thought with unconcealed contempt. “A mere abacus – mention it not.”

“And are you not,” said Fook leaning anxiously forward, ” a greater analyst than the Googleplex Star Thinker in the Seventh  Galaxy of Light and Ingenuity which can calculate the trajectory of every single dust particle throughout a five-week Dangrabat Beta sand blizzard?”

“A five-week sand blizzard?” said Deep Thought laughingly. “You ask this of me who have contemplated the very vectors of the atoms in the Big Bang itself? Molest me not with this pocket calculator stuff.”

There you have it – modest Google does not (yet) compare itself with Deep Thought.

A little side note that other well know subjects have been inspired by Douglas Adams. Many of you will know the TIFF file format used to store image data. This format is a tagged format and one of the initial tags that identifies the file as a TIFF file has a value of 42 and the official comment was that this value was chosen for the deep meaning of this particular value. The drafters did not quite come out with the full credits for this value which took seven and a half million years to compute, but made this tongue in cheek choice for all those geeks who know TIFF and Douglas Adams.

Germania v. Washingtonia

Synchronicities are always surprising and can, at times, be outright scary. Here is one that is somewhat in the middle.

Sometime last week I talked to somebody and the subject of Washington came up. The drives or walks along the impressive buildings oozing history, statesmanship and greatness of this nation. Did not really think much more about it and actually had the thought that I should take my son there and show him the sights that document how great this nation is.

This thought did not fit quite in with my latest subjects of study, my journey into the philosophy and realization of anarchy (*) but then again, I just had a chat with a friend who told me how she took her daughter to DC to show her the sights.

But the universe, or whoever that might have been, could not just let that sit there, no, it had to rub my nose into my glibness regarding this display of of state power, built in a way so that the people who actually build these temples for their masters, were even proud of their accomplishment.

So what did the universe (et al) do? – It threw this video into my general direction , so that I could not look past the facts any more…

Germania would have been bombastic, I’m sure, probably similar to how Washington, DC feels today to all the school children visiting the cradle of this greatest nation of the world, looking at the wonders and temples build to honor our politicians. I guess, as Hitler was not really a politician and lawyer, he was a lot more honest at what he was doing – Heil, Hitler! – for helping me to see a bit better what is going on and confirming the words of my two favorite anarchists (yes, I have two now!) – Larken Rose and Stefan Molyneux.

(*) anarchy: this word has two main meanings, one, that is often used in emotionally charged arguments, is a synonym for chaos and lawlessness, but the other one is the more objective definition of

  1. a state of society without government or law
  2. a theory that regards the absence of all direct or coercive government as a political ideal and that proposes the cooperative and voluntary association of individuals and groups as the principal mode of organized society.
a state of society without government or law.

The Curse of the Good Looks

When my son was born there was some concern about his being OK. Especially his aunt had, initially, some concerns about the head being flat on the back and then, when that turned out to be no problem, another possible problem she saw was that he possibly had too short legs.

But that also turned out not be a problem, so neither does he have now a flat head nor dwarf legs, but instead, it soon became apparent that he was a very good-looking boy. Soon the word was that he will be a heart breaker and that the girls once will follow him in hordes.

These new predictions turned out to be true and I have seen several females of all ages fall head over heal for him. On top of his looks, he also has that James Dean gene in him that can be another nail in the coffin for any female with the resonating on that wavelength. Just look at him…

good looking boy

From the very beginning I held, contrary to pretty much everybody else’s belief, the opinion that these good looks are a curse rather than a virtue. Why would that be? Everybody will love him, even if only for his looks, right? True, but for how long and at what price?

The problem is that he will not have to learn the basic forms of human interaction. There will be no need for him to learn to put his best side forward – because it’s already there. Just as somebody blind will develop a much sharper sense of hearing, so does an ugly person learn the skills to be accepted and/or liked by others by developing skills like attention to others or compassion.

A person with very good vision does not have the need to develop good hearing, so, neither does the very good-looking person need to develop interpersonal skills and become a ‘nice’ person.

Now we can throw in another deadly ingredient into the mix – shyness. If that good-looking person is shy, it will cause him or her to fall back onto the safest methods of being accepted – the looks; it will become more and more important to look good. On the heels of the need to look good, other forms of inferior personal traits will become relevant, like status, money, popularity while more important goals like happiness and spiritual fulfillment fall by the wayside.

This is a mechanism very similar to the dead ends of the path to enlightenment as described in the article Bad Enlightenment. A prime example for this deadliness of this curse of the good looks is the big number of dead or messed up movie stars in Hollywood. They could (and do) have it all but then, as in the case of Marilyn Monroe, they leave the current plane because they can not stand their superficial existence anymore.

But what can be done about all that?

Strange Black Holes to Fall Through

Ran into this fascinating video by the film makers Phil Sansom and Olly Williams about suddenly appearing black holes you can fall or climb through…

If this happens to our clueless office worker right there at work, could it not also happen to a boy of 11 and his little sister?

And, indeed, it has. These events are cronicled in the “Underlander Chronicles” by Suzanne Collins, a series of book that I can only warmly recommend if you are a parent who likes to read to the off-spring. The first book, Gregor the Overlander, got into our hands at a second hand book store for a mere quarter – you just have to recognize a treasure when it finds you. We read this chapter by chapter as good night literature and had to continue with the second book immediately. Today we finished this one and now we have a problem how to quickly get the third one.

Just in case you are looking for this as well, here are all the five books in the series (wondering if there is a number 6 in the works)…

Barak E. Neuman – Hope v. Hopeless

Based on the extensive use of the word ‘hope’ in the Obama campaign it appears that this is considered a good word. I have to disagree, looking where this word is most often used. Mr. Hubbard once framed the expression “Hope – the word of skid row” and skid row indeed appears to the area where hope is most rampant.

If we are able and willing to DO something we do not need hope – we have knowledge and confidence that we can manage. Once we have lost this confidence we are down to ‘hope’ – the area of skid row.

This also means that that we should lose that hope and become hope-less – again used in a not so common fashion. Usually hopeless is considered worse than having only hope, but considering we don’t need hope and can be hope-less if we have confidence in our ability to accomplish, hopeless is the state to be obtained.

So, therefore I present to you this polarity and let you decide what is the be better choice…

Fascinating to me is also to observe myself how I sometimes succumb to hope. For example during the last month of serious campaigning I subjected myself to the ‘hope’ that Ron Paul would make it – I still think that he is the only one on the scene that could have made a difference – and I was disappointed that he was killed off by the powers behind all this. I realize how powerless hope can make us.

So, let’s become hopeless and look at some facts that Charlie Reese, a former columnist of the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper, so eloquently assembled…

545 PEOPLE

By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The president does.

You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president, and nine Supreme Court justices 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislators’ responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it. The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted by present facts of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ, it’s because they want them in IRAQ.

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems. Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.

We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

The only thing where he might be off base is that we are still able to ‘vote’ them out of office. Just as it is now most common in companies, the moment an employee is fired he is escorted out of the building never to return, just in case he is so disgruntled as to cause some serious damage in his Rueckzugsgefecht (withdrawal combat – the way Germany left Russia in shambles on their way out when beaten.)

And am I able to imagine that a politician being disgruntled when he is fired?

Flying low and slow

Flying low and slow is always the more dangerous part of flying. That’s one thing you always try to get away from as fast as possible. Why is that you might ask if you are not a pilot. The idea that being high instead of low is safer seems to be counter-intuitive. Yet, if you are 5000 feet high and you make a mistake and perhaps unintentionally roll the plane, you have plenty of altitude to recover. If you are only 100 feet high the altitude where you finally recover is probably below sea level, and certainly below the surface 100 feet down.

But there are two times during a flight where low and slow is not avoidable – the transition from standing still at ground level to fast flight high up, and them coming back from up there to standing still on the ground again.

Now imagine that the horizonal space you have to make that transition is short and the plane you are flying is very big, then you might see situations like this…

Angels are here!

First I did not know what to think about this piece that I got in an email from Kathie – thanks, Kathie, consider this my reply 🙂

Then I thought about it and it occurred to me that this is something I get at this moment in time where I need to learn it. I looked into my life and indeed I could see the three types of angels described.

But let’s first take a look…

People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend, and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end.

Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled. Their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered, and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it. It is real – but only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind, but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season, or a lifetime.
Send this to every friend that you have on-line, including the person who sent it to you.

After this the piece goes a bit south because it gives a rating on the reader’s ‘people skills’ depending on how many replies are received and goes totally south-pole when making it into a regular chain letter promising me a wonderful encounter with another person at 4:35, I was just not to break the chain and send out this letter to at least seven other people.

Now, this I did not do – sorry for breaking the chain, but potentially it will get even better exposure, so if one of you readers feel like continuing, by all means, leave a comment and send this blog address to as many people as you like. By the way, leaving it here in this blog instead of adding columns over columns of >>> to the lines of the piece will make it easier to read after 10 forwards.

Anyways, there are lots of these type of messages but this one somehow stood out, that’s why I took the effort to post it here for other to get the same chance of gaining something out of it.

I did – how about you?
