The Money Bag Month

Calendar for July 2011 (United States)

This year, July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays. This happens once every 823 years, which means we will most likely not see this again during our life time. It is called the money bag. According to the email that conveyed this information to me I will have to forward this to my friends and money will arrive within 4 days. This is supposed to be based on Chinese Feng Shui. The one who does not forward…..will be without money.

Obviously I could not take this risk – so – there you go…

not true, check snopes and many other web pages. It happened last october.

hmm, dilbert, you nearly got me there – at least you made me check this. But I have to admit, if Google Calendar is not in error, this July does have five Saturdays. As for the rest of the story, I surely don’t know, and quite honestly, don’t care – but it’s a good story, and I did not find anything about this on snopes.

July has 5 Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays every year that July 1 is a Friday. Next time it will happen will be in 2016.

There I stand – totally embarrassed!
And I should be smarter because I once before fell for one of the these stupid stories. That time it was about canola oil being a better machine oil not really fit for human consumption. I was about to become an activist against canola oil when I, fortunately, checked that out on snopes.
Guess I got egg on my face once more. Obviously, every month with 31 days starting on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday always has 5 of those days – duh (says Homer.)

    Actually July 2011, 2016, 2022, 2033, 2039, 2044, & 2050 all have 5 Sun. 5 Sat. & 5 Fri. And that’s only over the next 50 years… and there are 43 other months over the next 50 years that also have 5 Sun. 5 Sat. & 5 Fri

I’m glad we’ve established that this 5-dayed month eoccurs more than once every 823 years.

It’s early in the morning still and I’m wondering if there is a simple solution to another part of the story.

“This year we’re going to experience four unusual dates.

    1/1/11, 1/11/11, 11/1/11, 11/11/11 and that’s not all…

Take the last two digits of the year in which you were born – now add
the age you will be this year. The results will be 111 for everyone in whole world.”

Forgive me if I can’t wrap my mind around this additive “magic” :D
Is there some math person who can reduce this 111 magic to math?

Any insight into why it was a supposed 823 year cycle?

    John,

this statement is not true. “Take the last two digits of the year in which you were born – now add the age you will be this year. The results will be 111 for everyone in whole world.”
There are still some people alive who were born in the 1800’s, so if they are turning 115 this year and were born in 1896 115+96 ? 111.

This turns out to be quite simple:

If you take the year you were born, and add your current age, you always get…the current year. Fairly obvious when you think about it, since your age is the difference between now, and the day you were born.

The trick here is because you only use the last two digits, it’s like subtracting 1900 (if you were born in a year starting with 19-, which most of us were). So the current year (which was 2011 when this was posted) minus 1900, is…111!

Try it now and you’ll find the answer has magically changed to 112. (2012 – 1900 = 112)

54 + 59 does not equal 111 unless I”m missing something in the equation.
nor does my son or daughters
